Flag of Virgin Islands
The flag of Virgin islands has a white background with a symbol at the centre. The 'V' and 'I' initials of the island are placed on either side of the symbol and are sky blue in color. The symbol consists of a yellow eagle holding a green olive branch in the right talon and three sky blue arrows in the left talon. The eagle has a shield placed on its chest which has alternating 13 vertical stripes of red and white color. The white stripes being narrower than the red stripes. The red stripes are there at the extreme ends.The stripes are placed on the shield below a blue colored block. The height of the block is approximately 1/4th the height of the shield.
The white base color of the flag represents purity while the three arrows symbolize St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John respectively which are the main islands that make up Virgin Islands.
The flag of the Virgin Islands was adopted by Executive Order on May 17, 1921. The flag is based on the official coat of arms of the United States. The islands were bought by US from Denmark for 25 million dollars in 1917.
