Flag of Vanuatu
The flag of Vanuatu has two horizontal equal width stripes, red at the top and green at the bottom. There is a yellow horizontal 'Y' along the centre of the flag with the triangular part on the left. This 'Y' is outlined in black with the triangular end completely filled in black. A yellow symbol is placed at the centre of the black triangle. The symbol has a boar's tusk with two leaves placed inside it. The leaves are from the local "Namele fern" having 39 fronds combined.
The colors of the flag represent:
- Green for richness of Vanuatu.
- Red for the blood shed of boars and people.
- Black for the people of Vanuatu.
- Yellow for the christianity, sunshine and peace.
The 'Y' is for the island since it is 'Y' shaped. The boar's tusk is worn as an emblem on the island and the leaves are a token for peace. The 39 fronds represent the 39 members of the legislative assembly.
The flag was adopted on February 13, 1980 and the design was chosen by the parliamentary committee based on the designs submitted by the local artists.
