Flag of Uruguay

The flag of Uruguay has 9 horizontal equal width stripes alternating between white and sky blue. There are five white and four sky blue stripes with white stripes at the top and bottom of the flag. A white square panel is placed at the top left corner of the flag. A symbol of yellow sun (Sun Of May) is placed inside this panel. The sun has 16 yellow rays coming out of it alternating between triangular and wavy.

The nine stripes represent the nine departments of the country. The Sun of May is a national symbol and has been in use since 19th century.

the flag was adopted on July 11, 1830 and was designed by Joaquín Suárez.
