Flag of Turkmenistan
The flag of Turkmenistan has a green background with a red vertical stripe on the hoist side of the flag. The stripe has five carpet guls (designs used in rugs) placed from top to bottom and stacked above two crossed yellow olive branches. Just to the right of the red stripe there is a white crescent moon pointing towards hoist with 5 white five point stars placed in the crest of the moon.
The crescent moon symbolizes hope for shining future and the 5 stars represent the 5 provinces of Turkmenistan. The 5 carpet guls represent the 5 major tribes of the country which are Tekke, Yomud, Arsary, Choudur and Saryq. The 2 crossed olive branches are taken from the flag of United Nations and they represent neutrality.
The flag was adopted on January 24, 2001 after the United Nations general assembly accepted its permenant neutrality on December 12, 1995.
