Flag of Republic of the Congo

The original flag of the Congo was restored in 1991 after being out of use for 21 years. The green-yellow-red diagonal design was in use from independence from France in 1960, until 1970, when a Communist government replaced it. The new flag was based on that of the USSR – red with local tools for agriculture and industry crossed in the canton under a star. The colors remained the same, to express continued solidarity with other African states. A change of government restored the original independence flag. The Congo is unofficially called Congo-Brazzaville (after its capital), to distinguish it from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Congo-Kinshasa). The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
