Flag of Comoros

On independence from France in 1975, the Comoro Islands adopted a flag which showed their Muslim faith and the legacy of their conquest by Arabs. Although it was adopted several times later years, the flag remained essentially the same, green with a white crescent and four stars for the four islands; yellow is for Mohéli, white is for Mayotte (claimed by Comoros but governed by France), red is for Anjouan, and blue is for Grande Comore. The current flag was designed in 2001 and in 2002 the flag was given its present form. The white crescent and start on green remain, as a triangle in the hoist. The horizontal stripes of yellow, white, red and blue represent the islands, as do the stars. The crescent itself stands for Islam, which is the country’s key religion. The ratio of the flag is 3:5.
