Flag of Chile
As the French flag was a model for the flags of emergent European nations stressing the ideals of progress and revolution, so was the American flag in the New World. The national flag of Chile is also well-known as “ La estrella solitaria” (In Spanish, it means "the lone star"). The Chilean flag’s colors were based on the Stars and Stripes, and it was adopted on 18 October 1817 during the struggle for freedom from Spain. Initially a horizontal tricolor of blue, white and red, the design was modified in 1854 to the present layout: two horizontal bands of white over red, with a blue canton charged with a white star. The white band depicts the snow of the Andes, the blue the sky, the red the blood of patriots who dies in the fight for independence, and the white start is a symbol of progress. The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
