Flag of Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands, also known as Colony of the Cayman Islands, were colonized by Britain, but administered by Jamaica until 1962. With Jamaican independence that year, they reverted to being a British colony. The flag is the British Blue Ensign, with the islands’ arms, granted on 14 May 1958. The shield has a gold English heraldic lion on red in the chief (upper part). Blue and white wavy lines below represent the sea, and the three green, yellow-fimbriated starts are for the islands in the group. The crest shows a coil of rope, which the islands once exported, with a local species of turtle and a pineapple to show the past link with Jamaica. Below is a scroll with the motto “He Hath Founded it Upon the Seas”. The ratio of the flag is 1:2.
