Flag of Benin

The national flag of Benin has horizontal yellow-colored bar at the top and a red-colored bar at the bottom with a vertical green-colored bar at the hoist side. The green color indicates hope, yellow color signifies wealth, and red color symbolizes courage.

There are other philosophies also for the colors on the flag. Yellow and green match to the savannas of the north and the palm groves of the south, while red referred to the blood of ancestors who defended the homeland and the connection among all parts of the country. The flag did not vary when the country became independent on August 1, 1960.

The flag of Benin (previously known as Dahomey) was officially adopted on November 16, 1959, following the founding of a self-governing republic in that former French colony.
