Flag of Barbados

The national flag of Barbados is divided into three vertical columns with blue (ultramarine) on extreme ends and a golden stripe at the center. The blue stripes stand for the ocean and the sky, and the golden stripe indicate the superior sand of Barbados. A broken black-colored trident (a spear with three prongs) is positioned at the core of the flag which is the sign of the mythological sea god known as Neptune. It signifies the independence from the United Kingdom and the three prongs indicate democracy.

The flag was designed by Mr. Grantley W. Prescod. His drawing was selected from 1,029 entries in an open competition arranged by the Government of Barbados. Mr. Prescod was honored with a Gold Medal, an inscribed scroll from the government and $500 which was contributed by the Advocate Company Limited.
