Flag of Algeria

The national flag of Algeria is sectioned into two equal vertical blocks. The left block is green in color whereas the right block is white in color. In the center of the flag, over the colored boundary, is a red colored five-cornered star and crescent. The white color symbolizes peace, the green color signifies the beauty of nature and the red color denotes the blood of the sacrificial victims during the Algerian war of independence (1954 to 1962). The central star, crescent and the green color represents a major religion called Islam (which is the state religion of Algeria).

The flag was officially accepted on July 3, 1962. The flag's blueprint is encouraged from the customs of Emir Abdel Kadir (6 September 1808 - 26 May 1883), who was an Algerian Islamic scholar and is perceived as their national hero, in the 19th century.
