Flag of Malawi

The ruling Malawi Congress Party used its flag, a horizontal tricolor of black, red and green, as the basis for the design of the new national flag when the country became independent in 1964. Its colors are symbolic: black represents the African people; red stand for the blood of the freedom fighters, and green indicates the land and its fertility. The rising sun was added to the black band in 1964 to symbolize a new dawn for Malawi and for Africa, and is based on the sun which appears, also against a black background, on the Malawi coat of arms.

The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
