Flag of Liberia
Liberia was settled in 1822 by the American Colonization Society as a homeland for freed American slaves. A similar form of flag to that ultimately adopted was in use at that time but was modified to its present form on independence in 1847. Its design is clearly based o the American Stars and Stripes. There are 11 red and white stripes in the field, to represent the 11 men who signed Liberia’s declaration of independence. The blue of the canton stands for Africa, while the five-pointed white star refers to Liberia’s status at the time of its gaining independence as the only independent African nation.
The ratio of the flag is 10:19.
