Flag of Kiribati

Formerly known as the Gilbert Islands, Kiribati, together with the Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu), was a British protectorate from 1892 and a colony from 1916. The process of separation of the two island groups began in 1975, and Kiribati (the local pronunciation of the word ‘Gilberts’) achieved independence in 1979. The flag was adopted in the same year and has blue and white wavy bands, representing the Pacific Ocean, over which a sun is rising in a red sky. A local yellow frigate bird flies over the scene. The flag was based on the arms of the former colony.

The ratio of the flag is 3:5.
