Flag of Kenya
Kenya was a British colony until independence in 1963. Its flag was adopted that year and comprises three horizontal bands of black, red and green, separated by two narrow white bands. The colors are said to represent the African people, the blood common to all humanity, and the fertility of the land of Kenya. The Masai shield and crossed spears in the center represent the defense of national freedom. The colors are also those of the Kenya African National Union Party which led the independence movement and formed the government until 1992. The white is for peace and national unity, the color being from the flag of the rival Kenya African Democratic Union Party.
The ratio of the flag is 5:9.
