Flag of Israel

The distinctive flag of Israel bears in its center the Magen David, or Shield of David, a Jewish emblem for over 700 years. The pattern of white and blue bands derives from the pattern on the tallith, the Jewish prayer shawl. The design emerged in the late 19 th century and had its origins in the Zionist movement, the nationalist movement which sought to reestablish a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It was officially adopted as the national flag on the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948. The ensigns also feature the star, while the flag of the president features the official emblem of the state, the menorah, the seven branched candlestick which is an ancient symbol of the Jewish people.

The ratio of the flag is 8:11.
