Flag of Iraq
The Pan-Arab colors of black, green, white and red were adopted by Arab nationalists in the early 20 th century as they fought the Turks. Traditionally the colors are said to represent the qualities of Muslims: red color is for the courage; white color indicate generosity; black color symbolize the triumphs of Islam; and the green color stand for religion. The flag’s pattern dates from 1963, when the royal regime established after World War 1 was overthrown. It was based on the Egyptian lag of the time, with the same pattern of bands. The three stars in the center band represent the then-hoped-for unity of Iraq, Syria and Egypt. The slogan ‘Allah-o-Akbar’ (God is Great) was added during the 1991 Gulf War.
The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
