Flag of Iceland
Invaded and colonized by Vikings from Norway in the 9 th century, Iceland has the distinction of having held Europe’s first parliament in 930. The country was ruled by Norway in the 13 th and 14 th centuries but when the Norwegians lost their independence to Denmark, Iceland passed to the Danes, too. The current flag was adopted in 1918 when Iceland became a separate realm in the Kingdom of Denmark, and became the national flag on independence in 1944. It is the same as the Norwegian flag – itself modeled on the Danish – with the blue and red colors reversed. The Scandinavian cross and Norwegian colors show Icelandic affiliations lie with the Norse countries.
The ratio of the flag is 5:7.
