Flag of Guatemala
Guatemala was a member of the United Provinces of Central America, who broke away from Spanish rule in 1821. The federation broke up 18 years later but all five nations retained the same basic flag. Guatemala changed its band from a horizontal to vertical design in 1871. The state flag has a national coat of arms in the center but unlike other members’ they are not based on the federation coat of arms. They feature a quetzal bird called Resplendent Quetzal (national bird of the country) on a scroll bearing the date of independence, 15 September 1821. Set behind are arms, the cross rifles for readiness to defend the country, a laurel wreath for victory and crossed swords indicating honor.
- The sky blue stripes indicate the reality that Guatemala is a land situated among two oceans, the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea; and the sky above the motherland.
- The white color implies peace and purity.
- The quetzal bird signifies liberty.
