Flag of Greenland

The world largest island, Greenland was settled by Native American hunters some 3,000 years before Europeans arrived in about AD-982. Norwegians settled on the islands in the 10 th century, but the island passed to Denmark, when the Danish and Norwegian crowns united. From the 18 th century, Greenland was run by the Royal Greenland Trading Company. In the 1950s it became part of Denmark, and has been self-governing since 1979. Its flag was the winner in a competition and was adopted on 21 June, 1985. The red and white color of Denmark remains, but now shows a far-northern scene, with white representing inland ice and icebergs and the red the sunrise and sunset.

The flag was crafted by a resident of Greenland named Thue Christiansen. The flag is named Erfalasorput (implicating ‘our flag') in the Greenlandic language. The ratio of the flag is 5:9.
