Flag of Ghana
Ghana was the first of the liberated African nations to take as its colors those of Ethiopia and the Pan African movement of Africa unity. The flag was crafted by Mrs. Theodosia Salome Okoh to substitute the flag of the United Kingdom upon realization of independence in 1957. The colors of this flag, however, are also symbolic in themselves; red color is taken to represent the blood of the freedom fighters that died for independence, yellow color is the mineral wealth of the country (when a British colony, Ghana was known as the Gold Coast), and green color is the rich forests. The black colored, five-pointed star set in the center of the yellow band represents the lodestar of African freedom. The Ghanaian flag was seminal in its influence on the subsequent adoption of flags by former African colonies throughout the 1960s. It was the first African flag following the flag of Ethiopia to display these colors.
The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
