Flag of Georgia

Shortly before achieving independence from the USSR, Georgia readopted the flag it had used during its brief period of freedom which was 1918-1920. The flag of Georgia, known as the "five-cross flag", re-established to official use on January 14, 2004 after a gap of approximately 500 years. It was formerly the flag of the medieval Georgian empire and had been implemented as the authorized sign of the United National Movement political party. In January 2004, this flag was replaced by a design which was even older, and which had also appeared in 1990. The flag is based on one used by Queen Tamar, a queen of Georgia in the 13th century. The white field and the red cross are the flag of St. George, seen also in other countries. The four small crosses have been variously described as of Roman or Orthodox origin.

The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
