Flag of Gambia
The Gambia, the smallest African country, was a colony of Britain from 1843 until it gained its independence in 1965. The new national flag was adopted at this time. It has three broad bands of red color, blue color and green color, separated by two fimbriations of white color. The green color is symbolic of the land, while the blue color represents the Gambia River flowing over it, and the red color stands for the hot sun beating down on both.
- Red represents the savannah’s green grass plains and the bright sun.
- Blue stripe indicates the river Gambia; which gushes amid the lush green forest.
- Green stands for the forests and farming.
- White indicates unity, purity and peace among the people.
The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
