Flag of Qatar
The flag of Qatar is similar to that of Bahrain, with which the country was once linked. The peoples of both countries are Kharijite Muslims, whose traditional banner was red. It is believed that the present maroon color came about from the action of the elements, especially the sun, on the natural red dyes once used for the flag. Like Bahrain, Qatar has zigzag white interlocks at the hoist, deriving from a British request in 1820 that all friendly states around the Arabian Gulf add a white band to their flags. The flag assumed its present form around the mid-19th century and was officially adopted when Qatar became independent in 1971.
The ratio of the flag is 11:28.
