Flag of Poland
The colors of white and red which form the flag are derived from the national arms, in use since the 13th century. These depict a white eagle on a red field. While the national flag is plain, other official flags bear the national arms. The national rising of 1830 – 1831 against the Russians (Poland being a part of the Russian Empire at this time) saw the adoption of red and white cockades by the insurgents, although the colors were proscribed after the rising was put down. The red and white flag was officially adopted in 1919, when Poland was reformed in the Versaillies settlement having been partitioned by the major powers in the previous two centuries.
The ratio of the flag is 5:8.
