Flag of Philippines
The Philippine flag had its origins in the liberation movement against Spain in the 1890s. It may have been inspired by the American flag, and was used in 1898 when the islands fell to America after the Spanish-American war. The white triangle in the hoist represents the liberation movement, while the blue and red bands indicate magnanimity and courage respectively. The colors are reversed in time of war. The large, eight-pointed yellow star in the triangle’s center commemorates the eight provinces who rose in revolt against Spain, while the yellow stars at the triangle’s points stand for the three main island groups: Luzon, Mindanao and the Visayan archipelago.
The ratio of the flag is 1:2.
