Flag of Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea unites the once-German territory of New Guinea with Australian-administered Papua. The country gained independence in 1975. The distinctive national flag has triangles of red over black. The ‘kumul bird’ of paradise, unique to the country and first used as an emblem in the 19th century, flies across the red half, showing PNG’s emergence into nationhood. The stars of the Southern Cross constellation on the black reflect the ties with Australia and other South Pacific nations. Black, red and yellow colors are traditional colors among the people of the country. The flag was designed by a 15 year old school girl. The flag was adopted in 1971.

The ratio of the flag is 3:4.
