Flag of Mozambique
Mozambique’s flag is based on that of its main political party, FRELIMO, who led the country to freedom from Portugal in 1975. The colors are symbolic: green indicates the evergreen land and its riches, black stand for the African continent, and gold for the mineral wealth. The red triangle at the hoist represents the patriotic fight for freedom, and the two white-fimbriations symbolize peace and harmony. The emblem of an open book under a crossed rifle and hoe stands for teachers and education, the army and the fight for freedom, and the economic importance of agricultural work. They are backed by the five-pointed gold star of Communism and Internationalism. This modified version of the original flag was adopted in 1983.
The ratio of the flag is 5:8.
