Flag of Montserrat
Although Montserrat, one of the Leeward Islands, was first discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, its main European settlers were not Iberian, but Irish. Irish settlers began arriving in the 1630s but the island ultimately fell to Britain and remains a British colony. Both its British and Irish connections are reflected in its flag. The Blue Ensign bears, in its fly, the island arms: a shield depicting a woman in green holding a gold harp. The figure represents Ireland, and the cross she embraces stand for the people’s love of Christ and Catholicism. The arms date from 1909.
The ratio of the flag is 1:2.
