Flag of Monaco

The Grimaldi families became rulers of the Monaco in the 13th century and are still in power today. The state’s relations with France and Italy have always been close but Monaco has retained its independence, and a constitution was established in 1911. The colors of the flag are taken from the ruling family’s coat of arms, which are of medieval origin: the central shield of the arms is covered by red and white lozenges, or diamonds. The flag was adopted in 1881 and is distinguished from the similar red-over-white bicolor of Indonesia by its squarer proportions.

The ratio of the flag is 4:5.
