Flag of Mauritius

The colors of the flag of Mauritius are those which appear on its coat of arms, which dates from 1906. The flag was adopted in 1968 on independence from Britain, which had ruled the island since 1815. The colors are said to have a particular significance; red represents the country’s independence; blue is the color of the Indian Ocean; yellow is for the country’s bright future; and green stands for its lush vegetation. Although red, yellow and green are also the colors of the Pan-African movements, the adoption of those colors for use in national flags has largely been a Central and Western African practice, so it is unlikely that they carry the same significance here.

The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
