Flag of Mauritania
As with the other former French colonies of North Africa, Mauritania chose not to use the tricolor as the basis of its flag and instead elected to depict the predominance of the Muslim religion in the country. The crescent and five-pointed star are traditional Islamic decoration, as is the color green which appears in the field. They also reflect the country’s appellation of an Islamic republic. The flag was adopted in 1959, the year before Mauritania won its independence from France.
The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
