Flag of Mali
Mali was a French colony from the late 19th century. Before independence it formed the Mali Federation with Senegal. At independence in 1960, Senegal left the federation. The flag is based on the French tricolor in style and the green-yellow-red pan-African colors. These were used by many former African colonies and express the wish for African unity. The same basic flag has been used since 1959, but at first it had a black human figure, the Kanaga, in the center. This was removed from the flag in 1961.
The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
