Flag of Faroe Islands
First settled by Norse people in the 9th century, then passing to Danish control in 1380 after the union of the Norwegian and Danish crowns, the Faroes have been under Scandinavian influence for centuries, and this is evident in the design of their flag. Although the islands are still a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, they have had an autonomous legislature since the mid-1940s, with the flag first being adopted in 1948. The colors of Denmark are revised out to an off-center red cross on a white field. The cross is fimbriated in blue, possibly a reference to past Norwegian influences. The ratio of the flag is 8:11.
