Flag of Equatorial Guinea

A former Spanish colony which gained independence in 1968, Equatorial Guinea’s flags reflect the country’s ideals and characteristics. The flag, also adopted in 1968, is a tricolor with horizontal bands of green, white and red to symbolize agriculture, peace and independence respectively. The blue triangle in the hoist is for the sea, which both divides the mainland from the links it to the country’s five offshore islands. The arms in the white band bear a shield with an indigenous silk cotton tree topped by six gold stars, for the main-land and five islands. A scroll below has the national motto: ‘Unidad, Paz, Justicia’, meaning ‘Unity, Peace, Justice’. The ratio of the flag is 5:8.
