Flag of El Salvador

El Salvador’s flag, adopted in 1912, is similar to the flags of the members of the United Provinces of Central America (see Costa Rica). There are three versions: plain for the civil flag; with the motto ‘Dios, Union, Libertad’ (‘God,Unity,Liberty’) in the white band for the merchant flag; and with the arms in the white band for the state flag and ensign (main image). These show a triangle, for equality, and contain a scene of five mountains (the federation members) between of two seas, with a cap of liberty above and a shining sun. Around is the date of liberation from Spain, 15 September 1821, and a rainbow under the triangle’s apex. The ratio of the flag is 3:5.
