Flag of Ecuador

As with Colombia and Venezuela, the flag of Ecuador is based on that of the South American liberators Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Miranda. The three countries originally federated as Gran Colombia, but this soon dissolved. Yellow is for golden America, blue for the sea and red for Imperial Spain. The arms show Chimborazo, Ecuador’s highest peak, with emblems for trade below. Four zodiac signs show the period in 1845 when Ecuador fought for independence, symbolized by the sun. A condor above represents freedom and the fasces (a bundle of rods containing an axe) below the authority of the republic. The arms are surrounded by a trophy of flags and weapons. Without the arms the plain tricolor is the civil flag and civil ensign. The ratio of the flag is 1:2.
