Flag of Djibouti
Djibouti, formerly known as French Somaliland, won independence from France in 1977, and its new flag was based on that of the Ligue Populaire pour I’Independence (People’s League for Independence), leaders in the independence struggle. The party had used the same basic flag since 1972; two horizontal bands of blue over green represent the people – blue for the Issas, who are Somalis (Somalis has a light blue flag) and green for the Afars, who are Muslims (green being a color traditionally used to represent Islam). The white triangle in the hoist symbolizes equality and peace, while the five-pointed red star centered in the triangle stands for national unity. The ratio of the flag is 1:2.
