Flag of Czech Republic

The Czech flag dates back to 1920, two years after independence at the end of World War 1. The new country, known as Czechoslovakia, was formed of three states, Bohemia, Moravia and Slovakia, so the flag had to express unity. The basis is the white and red of Bohemia, with the blue of Moravia added as a triangle. When Czechoslovakia was broken up before World War II, the flag was abolished, but it was reinstated when the country regained freedom in 1945. Although Czech and Slovaks had been involved in the Pan-Slav movement, the link between the Russian and Czech colors is coincidence. When Czechoslovakia split into two countries in 1993, the Czech Republic retained the traditional flag. The ratio of the flag is 2:3.
